The 2026 Tour de France gets underway on Saturday, July 4, with the race starting outside France for the first time in years as Barcelona hosts the Grand Départ. Rather than the traditional prologue or sprint stage, this year’s race opens with a 19.6-kilometre team time trial, the first time the Tour has begun with a team test of this kind since 1971.

Stage 1: A Scenic but Testing Opener

The route sets off along Barcelona’s Mediterranean waterfront with a scenic out-and-back stretch before heading inland, passing the iconic Sagrada Família at the 10.5-kilometre timecheck. The real difficulty comes late, with the Côte de Montjuïc climb followed by a punishing final push to the line up the Côte du Stade Olympique — a finish likely to shake up the general classification on day one.

The stage will also be run under a slightly unconventional format: times are recorded on the first rider across the line for each team, a rule already used at Paris-Nice since 2023, rather than the more common approach of timing a mid-pack rider. Expect teams to fine-tune their tactics accordingly.

Who’s Favoured to Win the Opener

Team time trials tend to reward strength in depth, and this year the smart money is on the powerhouse squads. Sports directors and pundits have installed a leading team alongside UAE Emirates-XRG as the favourites for the stage win, with Visma | Lease a Bike, Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe, and Lidl-Trek all considered credible outsiders capable of springing a surprise on the Barcelona seafront.

There was a significant boost for the general classification picture in the days before the race: Jonas Vingegaard has recovered in time to line up for Visma | Lease a Bike, with key teammate Edoardo Affini also confirmed to start after a nervy final few days of preparation for the Dutch-Belgian outfit.

What to Watch For

With the race running all the way through to July 26, the Barcelona opener is unlikely to decide the overall winner on its own, but a strong or disastrous team time trial can hand a rider a psychological and time-based head start that shapes the entire three weeks.
