Commonwealth Games 2026 Day 5 Round-Up: India’s Two Silvers and Highlights (28 July)

India enjoyed another productive day at the Commonwealth Games 2026 in Glasgow, adding two silver medals on Day 5 (Tuesday, 28 July) as Gulveer Singh made history on the track and Harjinder Kaur delivered on the weightlifting platform. A strong showing from the boxing squad, which sent several fighters into the medal rounds, rounded out an encouraging day for the Indian contingent at Scotstoun and the SEC Centre.

Gulveer Singh’s historic run

The reigning Asian champion Gulveer Singh became the first Indian athlete to win a Commonwealth Games medal in the men’s 10,000m, clocking 27:49.78 at Scotstoun Stadium. It was a race decided on the final lap, with Australia’s Ky Robinson holding on for gold in 27:48.93 and David Mullarkey of the Isle of Man taking bronze in 27:50.28. Gulveer’s late surge fell agonisingly short of the top step but sealed a landmark podium finish for Indian distance running — the kind of long-distance breakthrough Indian fans have waited years to see. His silver builds on the momentum the athletics squad has carried since the Games began, as previewed in our Glasgow 2026 India squad guide.

Harjinder Kaur lifts to silver

On the weightlifting platform, Harjinder Kaur claimed silver in the women’s 69kg category with a combined total of 227kg. She opened with 101kg in the snatch before producing a best clean and jerk of 126kg. Canada’s Charlotte Simoneau took gold with 240kg, while Australia’s Nya Phebe Hayman finished third on 218kg. It was a composed, career-best showing from Harjinder, adding to India’s traditionally strong medal returns in weightlifting at the Commonwealth Games.

Notable performances and near-misses

India’s boxers gave the day plenty of energy. Jadumani Singh advanced from the men’s 55kg quarter-final, while Preeti Pawar (women’s 54kg) and Priya Ghanghas (women’s 60kg) also won their last-eight bouts to move within reach of the podium. On the track, Vishal TK progressed to the men’s 400m semi-finals, though Rajesh Ramesh bowed out. In the pool, Srihari Nataraj advanced from the men’s 100m backstroke heats, while Sajan Prakash narrowly missed the semi-finals, finishing 28th overall. The mixed results underlined both India’s depth and the fine margins at this level.

Global highlights

Beyond the Indian camp, Canada’s Felix Dolci was the standout on the final day of artistic gymnastics, collecting three medals — gold in the men’s vault and horizontal bar plus bronze on the parallel bars. Australia’s Ky Robinson underlined the host region’s distance-running strength with his 10,000m gold, and the multi-sport programme continued to build towards its climax, with a star-studded athletics field still to come. Look ahead: India’s key events today

Wednesday, 29 July promises a packed schedule for India. In athletics, national record holder Parul Chaudhary lines up in the women’s 3000m steeplechase final chasing a maiden CWG medal, while Birmingham 2022 silver medallist Murali Sreeshankar targets a second podium in the men’s long jump. Manpreet Kaur competes in the women’s shot put final — an event we broke down in our shot put and triple jump preview — and Sanjana features in the women’s 77kg weightlifting final. Six Indian boxers, including Jaismine Lamboria and Narender Berwal, enter quarter-finals with medals a single win away.

India’s medal count keeps climbing as the Games move into their business end. For the full standings and how India stacks up across sports, keep an eye on our Sports Rankings & Standings 2026 hub. Stay with Prime Hunt Daily for tomorrow morning’s Day 6 round-up.
